A Study on the Paternity-Resigned Unwed Parents

Abstract
In order to investigate the actual condition of the unwed parents, this study was conducted for 2 months from July 1, 1982. The population surveyed was 249 unwed parents who had consulted about resigning paternity to S.W.S. from July 1, 1977 to June 30, 1982.
The result could be summarized as follows
1) In demographic backgrounds, 49.8% of the unwed mothers was in the age between 20 to 24yrs. and 51.8 % was under middle school graduates. And 43.3 of the unwed fathers was over 25yrs. in the age and 59.0% was over high school graduates. Most of the unwed parents was country-bred and was engaged in varieties of occupations earning a small income and in occupation.
2) The parents of the unwed mothers (71.1%) and the unwed fathers (54.6%) were both alive. The unwed mothers (51.0%) and the unwed fathers (45.4%) didn¢¥t lived with their parents for occupation & schoolwork while dating.
3) The subjects met in urban area (78.7%) as a chance acquaintance (42. 2 % ) and separated within lyr. (65.9%) and didn¢¥t cohabit (59.9%). And 86.7% of them had separated.
4) The unwed mothers after pregnancy were in occupation in 77.5% and have left their home (62.2%) and had no intention to abort (63.5%). The main reasons to be delivered were "With the secret intention to marry" (38.2%) and "being unable to abort" (36.5%). The degree of recognition about pregnancy was 63.9% of the unwed fathers, 54.6% of the unwed mothers¢¥ parent and 5.2% of the unwed fathers¢¥ parents.
5) In resigning paternity, baby¢¥s age was under 7 days mostly (77.5%)and most of decision-makers was the unwed mother¢¥s side (69.8%). Person referred baby to the welfare agency was the unwed mothers (66.7%) and they visited through the delivery place (58.6%). The main reasons to resign paternity were "with the intention to cover pregnancy" (46.2%) and "due to social & financial problems" (30.1 %).
